4 ZANDER AND ECKEL Leaves strongly reflexed above a broadened base, upper marginal cells bistratose in patches; laminal papillae mostly bifid, often crowded; Scotland; British Columbia, Canada; Japan; Yunnan, China; Bhutan, India var. insigne(dix.)bartr. 2. Leaves little reflexed, base not strongly widened, upper marginal cells unistratose; laminal papillae simple, scattered; West Indies; Central America; Mexico; Hawaii; Japan; Yunnan, China; Himalayas var. cylindricurn(bartr.)zand. Hymenostylium recurvirostrum var. cylindricum (Bartr.) Zand., comb. nov. Hymenostylium glaucum var. cylindricum Bart., J. Wash. Acad. Sci. 26: , basionym. TYPE: Jamaica, Farm Hill Works, Orcutt 5461 (FH! holotype; PC! isotype). Although West Indian specimens of H. recurvirostrum differ significantly in extreme forms from most continental collections, no satisfactory circumscription of a West Indian taxon could be made by Zander (1977) that allowed "practical identification of a majority of specimens" to variety. Inasmuch as biological discussions of the West Indian variant would be facilitated by having a scientific name available for use, a combination with the earliest varietal epithet whose type is clearly characteristic of the West Indian populations is provided above. The var. cylindricum is surely equivalent to Saito's (1975) concept of Hymentostylium aurantiacum (Mitt.) Par. in Japan, China, the Himalayas, and the Phillipines judging from descriptions and a few specimens examined, anc! to Molendoa crassinervis (Broth.) Bartr. of U.S.A.: Hawaiian Islands, Hawaii, s. loc., Hillebrand s.n. (H! holotype; FH! isotype) and specimens ex herb. W. J. Hoe. There are two other commonly recognized varieties of H. recurvirostrum. The var. latifolium (Zett.) Crum (syn.: Gymnostomum recurvirostrum var. scabrum (Lindb.) Grout) is characterized by papillose stems; these are said to be correlated with broader, more papillose leaves. Certain authors (e.g., Saito 1975; Crum and Anderson 1981) were little impressed with this as a taxon, citing poor correlation of stem and laminal papillae development, and lack of a geographical range distinct from that of the typical variety. Leaf shape is, in fact, not a very good character for this variety, and, although papillose stems may well be genetically determined, this character-state alone is not sufficient basis for a taxon. The var. commutatum (Mitt.) Pod?., characterized by elongate upper laminal cells, intergrades in that respect, at least in New World material, with all varieties recognized here. In all the varieties, elongate upper laminal cells are often found in perichaetial leaves of specimens with subquadrate upper laminal cells of cauline leaves. The elongate upper laminal cells of cauline leaves in H. recurvirostrum may be due to an extension of the developmental influence controlling the shape of the laminal cells of perichaetial leaves. Neither the var. latifolium nor the var. commutatum are recognized here. Of particular interest is our observation that clumps of both (Figs. 1-13) var. insigne and var. recurvirostrum (with strongly papillose stems, Zander and Eckel4389 (BUF, UBC) were growing at Bridal Veil Falls. No morphologically intermediate specimens were found. Fruiting plants were occasionally present in var. recurvirostrum, but only very young perichaetia were found, rarely, in var. insigne. Barbula amplexifolia (Mitt.) Jaeg., another species of Pottiaceae found at the Falls, proves to be a new record for British Columbia. This station helps fill in a north-south disjunctive distribution in the New World between the Northwest Territories, Alaska, and Arizona (Zander 19796). SPECIMEN EXAMINED: BRITISH COLUMBIA: Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park, ca. 90 km E of Vancouver, muck near Falls, Zander and Eckel4394 (BUF, UBC). Acknowledgements We are grateful to W. B.
