1 Taxonomy Taxonomy is the practice of classifying organisms. Taxonomy was founded by CAROLUS LINNAEUS. Linnaeus used simple physical characteristics to classify, such as the arrangement of reproductive organs on a plant's flower. Linnaeus's method of naming is still used today. It is a binomial system for naming organisms. This is known as BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE. Based on Latin or Greek words and often reflect a characteristic, a scientist, or place. Castor canadensis Helianthus annuus Scaptia beyonceae Classification Hierarchy Some organisms share many characteristic with each other. To distinguish such different degrees of similarity, organisms are divided into progressively smaller groupings called taxa (singular taxon). We have already discussed KINGDOMS, the most general taxon Canis latrans Some organisms share only a few. 2 Today, the relationships between organisms are based on DNA sequences which show the EVOLUTIONARY relationships between organisms. To remember the order of taxon use a mnemonic. 3 Common Names Common names are not precise enough to be used in science and sometimes may be confusing. BUT... a catfish is more similar to a CAT (or human) than any of the other "fish" organisms!!! For example: Starfish, shellfish, jellyfish, crayfish, and catfish. The word fish may imply that there is a relationship between all of these organisms. How it works Genus always begins with a capital letter and species always with a lower case letter. Both names must be underlined or italicized separately. Examples of scientific names: Felis domesticus (house cat) Hyperprosopon argenteum (walleye) Erethizon dorsatum (porcupine) Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato) Homo sapiens (human) Fun Names? Abra cadabra (snail) La cucaracha (moth) Wakie wakie (rat kangaroo) Ba humbugi (snail) Balbaroo fangaroo (kangaroo) Chaos chaos (protozoan) Longest name: Parastratiosphecomyia stratiosphecomyioides (fly) Shortest name: Ia io (bat) Cartwrightia cartwrighti named for Oscar L. A dichotomous key consists of a series of two part statements that describe characteristic of organisms. At each step of a dichotomous key the user is presented with two choices. As the user makes a choice about a particular characteristic of an organism they are led to a new branch of the key. Eventually the user will be led to the name of the organism that they are trying to identify. 4
