23 The Animal Kingdom Within the ocean there are diverse physical & chemical features that support a wide variety of life. Invertebrates compose 97% of all organisms on Earth. How much of the remaining organisms are vertebrates?

24 The Animal Kingdom Vertebrate? Animals with a nerve chord along their backs. Vertebrates are described under the Phylum Chordata. There are four defining characteristics of the Phylum Chordata: Dorsal nerve chord Notochord Post-anal tail Pharyngeal slits

25 The Animal Kingdom There are four defining characteristics of the Phylum Chordata: Dorsal nerve chord: hollow nerve cord (becomes brain & spinal chord in vertebrates). Notochord: flexible rod that support dorsal nerve cord (bones protecting spinal chord in vertebrates). Post-anal tail: extension past anal opening (disappears in many adult vertebrates). Pharyngeal slits: openings between throat & outside environment (in mammals present in embryos).

26 The Animal Kingdom Tunicates & Salps are chordates that are not vertebrates, exist exclusively in the ocean. Why are these organisms classified as chordates instead of invertebrates? In their larval form they exhibit of the defining characteristics of the Phylum Chordata (nervous system disintegrates in adulthood). Because they are chordates they are more closely related to humans than any invertebrate.

27 The Animal Kingdom Discussion: Why might there be more animal phyla in the ocean than on land & water? What s surprising about being more closely related to a sea squirt than an octopus or other invertebrates?
