1 Biology This course consists of 12 units, which provide an overview of the basic concepts and natural laws of Biology. Unit 1 deals with the organization of living organisms. Unit 2 addresses the chemistry of living things followed by cellular biology in Units 3, 4 and 5. Unit 6 is the semester exam over Units 1 5. Unit 7 concerns genetics and heredity of both plants and animals. Unit 8 covers microbiology and diversity. In Unit 9 we begin looking at larger organisms starting with plants. Unit 10 is concerned with animals, and humans. Unit 11 takes on the relationships between plants, animals and their environments. Unit 12 is the semester exam over Units There are lessons in each unit which are open book followed by quizzes after a few lessons, which are to be taken without notes or any other aids. There are a total of 13 projects. Projects must be completed while in that unit. These projects are all completed through the Late Nite Labs virtual laboratory. Log in information is sent to you at the beginning of the course which allows you to have 12 months of unlimited access to the lab. If you need help logging on, understanding how to manipulate the equipment there, or completing the calculations, call the academy and talk to one of the science teachers who would be glad to help you. Assignment Weighting per Unit With Projects Lessons: 15% Quizzes: 25% Projects: 30% Tests: 30% Assignment Weighting per Unit Without Projects Lessons: 21% Quizzes: 36% Tests: 43% In preparing to do the experiments, be sure you understand what the purpose of the project is before you attempt to write your hypothesis. Then use the If- Then format for your hypothesis. If you have any questions on this, or any other part of our program, please contact your instructor. All OWA courses are semester courses, with a.5 credit value. Biology has a part A and part B section (Unit 7 indicates the beginning of part B) when both sections are successfully completed, 1.0 credit is awarded. Any questions should be directed to OWA Registrar: Course Requirements 1. Keep up with your daily lesson plan. If you fall a day behind, work extra hard to catch up the next day. 2. Save the syllabus so you can review the outline to see things coming up that you might want to prepare for in advance. 3. You must pass the 80% threshold for each lesson before you can go on to the next lesson. 4. You may send a message to your teacher at any time or call the academy at

2 Resources Academy Support Glossary and Credits If you need help you may send a message to your teacher using the messaging system or call to speak with a teacher on the phone. Each unit contains a Glossary and Credits section with important formulas and definitions. This is a useful section to read and study. Resource Center Visit the Resource Center to access academic policies and additional student resources (handouts, study guides, and videos) to help you in your course. Late Nite Labs All students who choose to take Biology have the opportunity to prepare for college level biology courses through the use of an innovative, effective, and enjoyable on-line laboratory software program. Through a contract with Late Nite Labs, Odysseyware Academy students complete simulated laboratory experiments rather than the traditional LIFEPAC and SOS experiments offered as part of the curriculum text. We have carefully selected 13 biology experiments students are required to do as an integral part of their full-year biology class (7 in 1 st semester, and 6 in 2 nd semester). These experiments are designed to complement and reinforce the concepts taught in Biology. Students will be sent an providing his or her username and password and explaining how to access the website. Course Outline Unit 1: Biology: The Study of Life 1. Course Overview 9.
