1 Biology 2.1 Taxonomy: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum ICan2Ed.com Taxonomy is the scientific field that catalogs, describes, and names living organisms. The way to divide living organisms into groups based on their characteristics is called t. The science of organizing life forms using their physical characteristics is called t, a type of classification. Each level of c gets more specific about the characteristics of individual organisms. T classifies living organisms into groups and gives each group a scientific name. T is a way to organize and classify organisms. 1
2 Scientists around the world use t to identify organisms because the names are the same in all languages. In these tutorials, we will follow the t of a human named Jane, a goldfish, and an apple tree. DOMAIN Animals and plants are filed into specific locations for universal naming using the science of T. The first and largest classification is Domain. The largest classification of living organisms is D. D. The three D are Archaea (ancient single-call organisms without a nucleus), Bacteria (germs),, and Eukarya (algae, fungi, plants, and animals). 2
3 All living organisms fall into one of three D. Scientists use a three-d system to classify organisms. Jane, the goldfish and the apple tree are all classified in the D Eukarya. The three D are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. The D are divided into 5 or 6 classifications called Kingdoms. Some scientists believe the classification of K has five different groups: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. Some scientists believe the classification of K has six different groups: Bacteria, Archaea, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. 3
4 Life forms are placed within a K because of their cellular structure. The type of cell wall, the presence or absence of a nucleus and the type of other inner genetic similarities determines the K into which an organism is placed. In the science of classification called t a K is a group of genetically similar organisms. Jane and the goldfish are both in the K animalia, while the apple tree is in the K plantae. K are based on how living things are the same, and how they are different. A mushroom would be in the K fungi. 4
5 The science of organizing life forms using their physical characteristics is called t. D. The D are divided into 5 or 6 classifications called K. PHYLUM Grouping organisms based on general body plan development and function under each K is the classification level of Phylum The primary subdivision of a taxonomic K, grouping together all classes of organisms that have the same body plan is a Phylum. A subset within a kingdom is called a P. The first level of division in a Kingdom is the P. 5
6 Organisms are classified by Domain, Kingdom, then P. In taxonomy a P is a group of similar organisms based on body type and function. In taxonomy, the word division is another name for P. Jane and the goldfish are in the P (division) chordata and the apple tree is in the P (division) magnoliophyta. D. The Domains are divided into 5 or 6 classifications called K. 6
