1 KNES Primary School Year 5 Science Course Outline: Year Overview. The Year 5 program of study for Science will take students on a scientific adventure through various activities which will be done according to the different topics they will be doing. The topics that they will do are: Properties and Changes in Materials, Forces, Earth and Space, Living Things and their Habitat as well as Animals, Including Human Beings. Students will get a chance to understand and utilize the scientific principles of observation, recording and investigation, as well as others scientific approaches, to explain and provide answers to questions based on the topic they are doing. As part of the efforts for students to garner a well-rounded Year 5 Science education, they will utilize resources such as textbooks, materials found in the home, materials resources at school as well as other useful resources and apparatus that they can use to carry out scientific investigation for their level. Student will also do research/work cooperatively on different class activities as the school year progresses. It must be noted that home work will continue to play an integral part of the program of study. Students will be given assignments to either read ahead of class or complete take home worksheets as well as other note book activities. Design, ICT and Art will also be incorporated throughout this year s work in this subject Class Rules: If a pupil is absent, it is his/her responsibility to get his/her homework assignment from a classmate and submit it when he/she returns. Homework left at home will be considered as not being done. If a test or deadline on an assignment is missed, the pupil will receive 0% unless he/she can provide a letter from a medical doctor to show the reason that he/she was not able to attend. It is the pupil s responsibility to come to class with the necessary books and other itemsthey are of no value sitting at home. Pupils are to use the washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks. They are not to be asking to leave class to use the washroom except in emergencies which should not occur often. Pupils are to line up immediately at the start of the day or at break time as soon as they hear the bell. No food and/or drink is allowed into class.
2 Unit Outline: Subject: Science Term 1 Week Task/Topic/Area Learning Outcome. Students will be able to: a. recognize that the Earth, Sun and Moon are spherical and support this with some evidence b. Use the idea of the Earth s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. c. Use models created to learn how the three bodies (sun, earth and moon) move relative to each other and how these movements relate to night and day d. Identify properties of given materials e. Identify/observe changes in selected materials f. Understand that some changes can be reversed g. Name changes that can be reversed Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Term 1 Earth and Space: Planets Understand that the sun is the centre of the solar system Understand that there are eight large planets and at least one dwarf planet that orbit the sun. Earth and Space: Revolution Understand and record the fact that the earth moves once around the sun in a roughly circular orbit once a year. Understand that the earth take 365 ¼ days to orbit the sun Earth and Space: The moon Understand that the moon orbits the earth about once each month Conclude that the shape of the moon appears to change as it goes around the orbit. Earth and Space: Rotation To understand that day and night are caused Ideas from from ancient scientist: Ptolemy and Copernicus (big ideas) by the earth spinning on its axis Know that at any moment the time is different at different places on earth. Know that it was once thought that the earth is the centre of the universe( Ptolemy s idea) Understand that the sun is the centre of the universe(copernicus s idea)
3 Week 6 Assessment Week 7 Week 8 Week 9 Week 10 Week 11 Week 12 Reversible and irreversible changes- Reversible and irreversible changes- Understand that mixing materials can be reversed in other ways Understand that heating and cooling reverse changes of state. Carry out experiment to identify the change/new materials formed Have discussion, based on experiment, to conclude that once a new material is formed then the change is not necessarily reversible. Carry out experiments to understand that sieves can separate mixtures of solids with different sized particles Understand that filter papers can separate solid particles from water Understand what is meant by fair test as it relates to carry out experiments and say how fair test can help in investigating dissolving Understand margin of error as it relates to concluding an investigation ( sometime errors can creep in but you can spot these.) Understand that solids can be recovered one they have dissolved in water. It can be reversed. Understand that dissolving is when a solid mixes with a liquid so that you can t see the solid anymore Conclude that some materials can produce new materials. Realize that their observation will tell them if something new has been made/created Week 13 Assessment Assessment Term 2 Week 1 Forces Learning Outcome. Students will be able to: Understand the concept of gravity Know the cause of gravity Week 2 Forces: Gravity Understand that a force is a push or a pull Differentiate between weight and mass Understand that the force of gravity pulls objects towards the face of the earth Week 3 Forces: Resistance (Air and water) Understand that the more streamlined an object is the less drag force it will encounter as it moves (Through air or water)
4 Week 4 Forces: Friction Understand that friction is a force that happens when two materials rub against each other Name situations in which friction can be useful Week 5 Forces: Friction Use materials in the surrounding to investigate friction Say how friction can be reduced Week 6 Assessment Assessment Week 7 Living things and their habitat -How do flowers make seeds? Understand how flowers make seeds Draw and label a diagram of a flower Understand the processes of pollination and fertilization Name the conditions that make it possible or a seed to grow Week 8 Living things and their habitat -Do all plants reproduce the same way? Know the parts and function of the different parts of a flower Conclude that plants reproduce sexually and asexually Differentiate between sexual and asexual reproduction Say why a plant may not be pollinated Answer questions on plant and animals from graphs Week 9 Living things and their habitat -Do all animals have eggs? Guided by teacher, understand how animals reproduce Understand what makes eggs grow into babies View scan/x-ray of a pregnant mother to understand the development that a baby goes through before birth. Week 10 Life cycle of different animals Understand that the life cycle of different animals varies Study diagrams of the life cycle of different animals. Example: (a)the fly, (b) The bird (c) the caterpillar Understand that some animals look like their young while some young change completely as they grow up Use internet, books and other learning resources provided by the school to do simple research/es

For example the cat Week 5 Animals, Including Human Compare gestation period of other animals with human beings e.g. A giraffe takes about 16 months to parturate. Week 6 Animals, Including Human Say how we know a baby is growing Use different instruments to measure height, arm, feet Week 7 Animals, Including Human Explain why children go through puberty Week 8 Animals, Including Human Revisit and compare mammals and animals that lay eggs Week 9 Animals, Including Human Do research activities and complete related activities in text book Week 10 Animals, Including Human
