2 I. Introduction Four pillars of destiny (BaZi) began in the Tang Dynasty. It is a way of recording date, time and a person s birth. It can be seen in a person's life as well as fortune, so we are able to avoid bad luck beforehand. However, BaZi fortune-telling cannot just be seen as attribution to know our personality and fortune analysis completely, it must add the Five Elements (Wu Xing) to make further discussion. It is like Weston s constellation, but BaZi study concerns more extensive than the constellation. Most of the people usually like using constellation to know their personality and fortune, however, they don t use BaZi because it is troublesome, difficult, unpopular, and oldfashioned. Some people think that the constellation is not able to see our fortune accurately since there are countless people having the same constellation in the world. By comparison, BaZi focuses on each individual s fortune, not everybody s, so it may be more precise than a constellation. Consequently, the purpose of the research is to investigate the differences between BaZi and constellation, further utilizing BaZi to understand people s personality and fortune, as well as examining what effect that will cause. In the meanwhile, the study aims to compare and analyze other person s personality and fortune who has the same birthday date but was born in a different year. II. Thesis 2-1 BaZi is composed by Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Heavenly Stems have ten compositions. The first one is the first of the ten Heavenly Stems (1H) and so on. Odd numbers of Heavenly Stems are Yin and double the numbers of Heavenly Stems are Yang. Each combination of the two has five orientations. Earthly Branches have twelve compositions. The first one is the first of the twelve Earthly Branches (1E) and so on. Earthly Branches same as Heavenly Stems, odd numbers of Earthly Branches are Yin, and on the contrary, they are Yang. Also, you can associate Earthly Branches and Chinese Zodiac. (Qingyuan Zhang, Bo Huayi, 2006) For example, 1E equal Rat and 12E equal Pig. Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches evolved out various combinations, and these combinations will be able to find out our fortune. Wu Xing has five compositions, and they are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Soil. Each composition represents something different, such as the Four Seasons, colors, apparatus, and orientation etc. What s more, they also can correspondence Heavenly 2

3 Stems and Earthly Branches (form-2.1). Wu Xing can generate each other whereas they prevail over each other (picture-2.1). (Pimo Hung, Yuzhen Jiang, 1990) The production cycle goes as followed: Metal carries Water; Water nourishes Wood; Wood feeds Fire; Fire creates Soil, and Soil bears Metal. The subduction cycle goes as followed: Metal chops Wood; Wood parts Soil; Soil absorbs Water; Water quenches Fire, and Fire melts Metal. Each region corresponds to a zodiac, which is what we now call the constellation. In 1928, International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified these regions, and twelve constellations became thirteen. While there is a new constellation, Western astrology would not be affected. From the spring equinox, every two solar terms are a constellation. The first constellation is Aries and the last one is Pisces. 3

4 Western astrology began in 626 B.C. Each constellation has its own personality and character; as a result, the people who have the same constellation would have some similarities inevitably. When we say what constellation a person is, actually it means that the day he was born could not see the same constellation.(hongjun Zhu, 2012) Just one example can explain what it means. My birthday is on November 18 and my constellation is Scorpio, so on that day, we would not see the Scorpio. In other words, on July 23 to August 22, we would not see the Leo. 2-3 Just as Eastern fortune-telling has five compositions, Western astrology also has four elements. The four elements are Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Twelve constellations according to the influence of the four elements can be divided into the fire signs, earth signs, air signs, and water signs (Form-2.2). (Hongjun Zhu, 2012) Each element has different characteristics: fire sign people are passionate, forthright, impulsive, and often lack of thinking. The most important thing for them is that self-identity. For example, they want to get the champion or get others laudation. Earth sign people are solid, stable, practical, but less momentum. Air sign people are quick thinking, have a rich imagination, however, sometimes they are too emotional and often get their own ways. Water sign people are delicate, sensitive, vulnerable and compassionate. Water sign people are suited for the some jobs, such as artist, musician, and painter. (Jesse Tang, 2013) If Western astrology only used the four elements to classify and study twelve constellations that would be too shallow. Consequently, Western astrology also utilized the other way to classify twelve constellations. Twelve constellations were divided into Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable (Form-2.3). (Hongjun Zhu, 2012) Cardinal people are very self and they have a great personal ambition. Fixed people are very practical, but they often worry about interpersonal relationships. Mutable people attach importance to happiness and money, and they think that earning money is more important than freedom. (Jesse Tang, 2013) Because of these classifications, each constellation has different clear features but also has similarities. However, you can not know your own fortune but all people s with the same constellation. That s why I study BaZi and compare it with constellation. I will put two destiny patterns and explain the meanings of each word and what affect it would bring about. The date of the first destiny pattern adopt is November,18,1997 and time are at 2 p.m. (Form-2.4). The second destiny pattern s date is November,18,1995 and the time is at 8 p.m. (Form-2.5). The two persons are girls. Then, I will also put the constellation analysis to analyze what the similarities and differences. The ten nexus are Bi Jian, Jie Cai, Shi Shen, Shang Guan, Zheng Cai, Pian Cai, Zheng Guan, Qi Sha, Zheng yin, and Pian Yin. Ten god can generalize a person s personality, family relationship, career orientation, rich, and poor. (Zongzhi Cai, 2009) The year pillar in ten god is Shang Guan, which means that the girl may not be good at communicating with elders, often got sick or has the miserable childhood and felt self-abased when she was a child. Zheng Guan in the lunar pillar means that she is a good friend in others mind and she will have a high social reputation after starting working. However, she may just want to find honorable jobs. Zheng Yin in day pillar means that her spouse is to be a temperamental, decorous, and kind person. In marriage, the girl wants to have spouse s care and protect. Her husband s work may 5

6 be regarded to office, writer, or artist etc. The time pillar in Zheng Guan means she will have a good reputation when she gets old. Also, her children s ability is outstanding. In 2034, 2035, 2042, and 2083, she needs to be careful because her fortune will be bad. In 2016, her fortune about money will be very lucky, but her examination luck will not be smooth. Moreover, their personality also has some differences. The year pillar in ten god is Shi Shen, it means that the girl is very intelligent with good logic. However, she was not healthy when she was a child that her parents often took pains with her. The girl s lunar pillar is Pian Cai means that she would make a lot of money when she began to work. However, her social skills are very good and she does not value his money, so she would spend over her money quickly. Qi Sha in the day pillar means that her spouse s personality is possibly resolute and irritable. Her spouse is shrewd and bold, also, the social skills are as good as him. Jie Cai in the time pillar means that the girl s money will be taken away by her children and job partners, so her wealth will poorer and poorer. She will not like living with her children because her self-esteem is strong and she will feel inferiority. In 2043 will be her worst year. In 2016, her fortune will great all of aspect, especially money, luck and love. (Yulong Yang, 2008) 2-4 In the light of two destiny patterns, the two persons have some similar personalities. Although their birth date is the same, they still have much distinctive like their 2016-fortune. Based on the two births, their constellation is Scorpio. The Scorpio people are smart, perseverant, intuitive, confident, and insistent. But they also are jealous, impulsive, irritable, stubborn, and skeptical. In 2016, the Scorpio people will undergo a lot of ups and downs, especially their career lucks. Because Ruler Mars will go in career House, it will let the Scorpio people have more chances of business 6

7 transactions. However, they still have to work hard and then can get reward and bonus. What mentioned earlier illustrated was that the Scorpio people s career luck will be good, as the result, they also can earn much money. (Jesse Tang, 2015) III. Method 3-1 The purpose of this study is to explore the association of BaZi and personal fortune. Also, I use constellation as a comparison object. The method to carry out this study was using questionnaire, which the participants were expected to respond and elicited concerning their attitude. Moreover, the questionnaire can shows whether the people use constellation fortune-telling more than BaZi fortune-telling. Subjects were recruited though posted sign-up sheets, messages, and by word to mouth. I disseminated questionnaires on the Internet and got 80 samples back. I designed five questions not only to see whether people use constellation to know their fortune more then use BaZi fortune-telling but also see how many percent of people have interested in BaZi fortune-telling. I sent the questionnaires on October 11, 2015 and withdrew them on October 25, When I studied the information, data, and books of BaZi, there were many proper nouns I could not understand or applied to the fortune-telling. The reason of why I couldn t understand is that the book used classical Chinese to write. Moreover, these nouns are difficulty translate to English and use English to explain. Besides BaZi, I also have to research the constellations and find out the differences and similarities between it and BaZi. The biggest difficulty is I computed the two destiny patterns (Form-2.4, Form-2.5). I need to use perpetual calendar to compute the two people s Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. After I find out each combination, I have to determine their destiny patterns and explain it by using English. After done this, I need to search the information of the constellation and then compared it between BaZi. IV. Conclusion 4-1 After statistical and analysis the questionnaire, the results were what was 7

8 expected. In 80 people, everybody knows the constellation fortune-telling and 48 people know BaZi fortune-telling (60%). In the use of proportion, only 25 people use BaZi fortune-telling (25%), and 68 people (85%) use constellation fortune-telling. However, there are 43 people (53.75%) want to choose BaZi fortune-telling if they have a chance to know their fortune. The result shows that over half of participants are interested in BaZi fortune-telling. (Table-4.1) Do you know BaZi/Constellations? However, fewer people know traditional BaZi and try to use it. A certain degree of the reason of this part is that people can get constellation s information in the magazines and net easily. On the contrary, the information about BaZi is hard to get and BaZi is more mysterious, so people will think that BaZi is difficult to understand. From the point of view of the questionnaire, many people still choose BaZi to know their fortune in case they have a chance. Maybe it represents that people actually still have a confidence of BaZi to some extent. However, the constellation fortune-telling is the 2nd. It shows that many people are also willing to accept the use of constellation fortune-telling to know their future. In addition to weekly fortune, there are a lot of videos which is about each constellation people s behaviors. Fortune-telling is a spiritual sustenance that Taiwanese often use in everyday life. It lets us know what may happen in the future that we can plan our life plan or recent 8

9 plans. Like Confucius said: At fifty, I knew the decrees of Heaven. Control the points of their future developments can let them all water runs to his mill. But, we can t make a fetish of any fortune-telling. What's meant for you never passes; what's not always. Don t pursue those unreal things. If you make a fetish of fortune-telling, you may harm yourself. After all, man proposes, God disposes. The most important, do your best and let God do the rest. V.
