9 INTRODUCTION TO LIVING BUDDHA SHENG -YEN LU Living Buddha Sheng-Yen Lu used Landscape Feng Shui to find the most auspicious place to locate his temple.the place he chose was Seattle, USA, next to the most successful business organisation in the world -the Microsoft Corporation owned by Bill Gates - the world's richest man! The Microsoft headquarters are situated on a feature of the landscape known as the Dragon's stomach. This is one of the reasons for the company's success. The Living Buddha's temple is situated on the Dragon's head. Grand Master Lu is successful in the spiritual way, whilst Bill Gates is successful in the material way. This is why his True Buddha School has become so important around the world. Grandmaster Sheng-Yen Lu was born in 1945 in Taiwan. Originally a Christian, he was twenty six years old when a profound mystical experience led him to study Taoism, Sutrayana and Tantric Buddhism. After intense training and practice over a period of fourteen years, he became a Master of exceptional accomplishment in these disciplines and achieved perfect enlightenment. In 1982 he settled in the United States to promote Buddhist teachings in the West. He has since built a major Buddhist temple, the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple, in Redmond, Washington and a large retreat centre in the Cascade Mountains.

10 Grandmaster Sheng-Yen Lu is now a prominent religious figure throughout south-east Asia. As of1999, over 4 million people had taken refuge in his True Buddha School, including many well known and highly respected Tibetan Tulkas and Rinpoches. With over 300 chapters & 30 temples worldwide, the True Buddha School is recognised as a major component in Buddhism today. Grandmaster Lu is revered as a Living Buddha by his students. By practising the True Buddha Tantric Dharma, as taught by the Living Buddha, one can realise awakening and liberation in this present life. He is also a prolific writer, having published over 150 books in Chinese on such varied topics as Tantric Buddhism, Feng Shui, Zen Buddhism and Taoism. On the subject of Feng Shui, he has written 5 books. These explain the secrets of ancient Chinese texts and incorporate a spiritual aspect involving the use of Taoist talismans to aid the Feng Shui. Many of these books are now being translated into English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese... Now Grandmaster Lu has retired and is resident in Tahiti. 13 WHAT ARE THE 8 MANSIONS? 8 Mansions Feng Shui is also known as I Ching Trigram Feng Shui, because it is using the 8 trigrams of the Pa Qua (Bagua). The Pa Qua represents 8 different buildings or Mansions. The theory is to use the sitting direction of a building and match it with the Pa Qua to find the house trigram (element of the house). The Pa Qua is represented by 5 different energies - the 5 elements - which are: Name Element Trigram Position Star No Chen - Wood Sun Li Kun Ken Tui - Metal Chien - Metal Kan - Wood - Fire - Earth - Earth - Water E 3 SE 4 S 9 SW 2 NE 8 W 7 NW 6 N 1 13

14 These 8 Mansions follow the productive and destructive cycles of the 5 elements (5 energies). They are separated into 2 different categories according to their elements. Chien, Tui, Ken, Kun are the West 4 trigrams (West 4 Mansions), which belong to the metal and earth elements: Chien & Tui belong to Metal Ken & Kun belong to Earth In the productive cycle of the 5 elements (5 energies) earth produces metal, therefore it does not matter how these elements are matched as they both help each other. Kan, Li, Chen, Sun are the East 4 Trigrams (East 4 Mansions) and belong to water, fire and wood: Kan belongs to Water Li belongs to Fire Chen belongs to Wood Sun belongs to Wood These trigrams also use the productive cycle of the 5 elements (5 energies). Kan (Water) creates Chen & Sun (Wood) Chen & Sun (Wood) create Li (Fire) Once again, these elements all help each other. Problems only occur when the elements of the East and West mansions are mixed. In this case the destructive cycle of the elements will have a destructive result. 14

20 HOW TO FIND YOUR ELEMENT The starting point to do Feng Shui for your home or business is to discover by which of the 5 elements (5 energies) you are most influenced. This is calculated using a formula based on the year of your birth. From this information we can find out which directions are most beneficial to you out of the 8 directions of the Pa Qua (Bagua): As the elements are either positive or negative, so NORTH NORTH EAST EAST SOUTH EAST SOUTH NORTH WEST WEST SOUTH WEST the directions are also classed as positive and negative. These are known as the 4 East Trigrams or Eastern Life (4 Mansions) and the West 4 Trigrams or Western Life (4 Mansions). You therefore have 4 good directions and 4 bad directions. Apply the formulae given on the next pages to find out which directions are good for you. 20

27 HOW TO LOOK UP YOUR LOK SHI FLYING STAR NUMBER The chart on the previous page shows the relationships between the 5 elements (5 energies), the trigrams and the 8 directions. When using the formulae shown on the previous pages just refer to the 5th row of the chart entitled "Lok Shi Flying Star Numbers". Match the result of the formula with one of the numbers shown here. When you find the matching column, move up to the third and fourth rows of that column to find the element and the direction it represents and whether the energy is positive or negative according to the West 4 trigrams or East 4 trigrams. You will also see a shaded area both on this chart and the personal elements & direction charts that follow. This shows the East 4 trigrams and the West 4 trigrams. This difference is significant in that the energies between the two categories of trigram are opposing. One is positive energy the other is negative - like a (+) or (-) electrical charge. 27

35 PERSONAL ELEMENT FOR WESTERN LIFE AND EASTERN LIFE On both the previous Correspondences Chart and the Personal Elements & Direction Charts you will have seen a shaded area and a white area called Eastern Life & Western Life. These classifications represent opposing polarities of energy caused by the difference in magnetic fields between East and West. This difference is significant in that the energies between the two categories of trigram are opposing. One is positive energy, the other is negative - like a (+) or (-) electrical charge. If your element belongs to one category of trigram - the West 4 trigrams for example, then there are only four directions that are beneficial to you. The other four are harmful. Over the next few pages we have included a number of diagrams to illustrate whether a building belongs to the East 4 Mansions or West 4 Mansions. 35

41 MATCHING YOUR PERSONAL ELEMENT WITH THE HOUSE ELEMENT For a building there are also 2 types of element (energy) - either East 4 Mansions and West 4 Mansions, depending on the position in which the building is sitting or facing. If the surroundings are similar and you are not sure which is the sitting & facing position of the building, then you should use the front door direction as the facing position. Once you know the occupier s date of birth, you can find out their personal element. Then, using the sitting and facing direction you can find out the element of their house and whether it belongs to the East 4 Mansions or West 4 mansions. If the building belongs to the East 4 Mansions and you are Eastern Life, this will be a good match. However, if it doesn t match then there is still a solution, as described in the next section. 41

42 THE SOLUTION WHERE THE HOUSE ELEMENT AND PERSONAL ELEMENT DO NOT MATCH Sometimes you will find that the house element and the personal element do not match. For example, when an East 4 mansions building is in a good area such as the East (no.1 wandering star - Prosperous chi), but for the personal trigram (Western Life), East is a bad area (No.7 wandering Star - 5 Ghosts), then there will be a conflict. 52 The ancient Chinese believed that the relationship between the person and the house was very important. To them, the house was a representation of the body and could therefore affect its well-being. For this reason they took the relationship very seriously. In Feng Shui, your personal element and house element have to match. If they are compatible, you will live a better life and achieve success. However if they are incompatible you will have constant bad luck. In the classic Chinese Feng Shui text - Eight Mansions Mirror they discuss this relationship between the house and person in some detail. In the book they advise using the Pa Qua (Bagua) and elements to determine the element for the house and for the person. If they are compatible that is fine, but if not it spells bad luck for the person living in the house. The Pa Qua has 8 directions which correspond to different elements. To find the house element we use the buildings sitting position to separate the house into the 8 directions. It is then categorised into EAST 4 MANSIONS if it is South, South East, North or East, or WEST 4 MANSIONS if it is South West, North East, West or North West. 76 If your main door opens in a direction which is bad for you, how do you change it? There are 2 ways to do this: 1. Use colour to neutralise the effect of the bad influence. This method uses the philosophy of the productive and destructive cycles of the 5 elements (5 energies). Each direction represents one of the 5 elements (5 energies) and the elements are all represented by certain colours: Wood Fire Earth Metal Water Green Red/Purple Yellow White Blue/Black 2. Add an extension so the door faces a good direction. This may be a more difficult solution than using colours, especially if the house is very small - however, it is the most effective method. On the next page is an example of how to change your door position. 76

77 Using a coloured doormat/carpet and painting the door to neutralise the effect of the bad influence is based on the philosophy of the productive and destructive cycle of the 5 elements. 77

78 The diagram below shows the main door facing the north direction. This direction belongs to the East 4 Mansions which is good if you are an Eastern Life person. Therefore the door doesn t need to change. However if you are a Western Life person then this is a bad position and the door must be changed. What we need to do is make an extension so the door faces one of the two nearest West 4 Mansions. These are north east and north west. The owners were a newly wedded couple: a charming bride and a talented bridegroom. The house was surrounded by many trees with red flowers which have borne red fruit as well. I started my examination presently. I found that the fire in the kitchen was problematic. This new residence had a very original design, with the stove in the kitchen right in the centre. The stove is exposed completely, with nothing to screen it from any direction; the water tap from the sink faces the stove directly without the slightest deviation. There are two problems in this case: First, the stove in the kitchen should also be in a place which collects air and vitality forces. For only in a place like that, can the heat concentrate and can the fire heat up things quickly. According to A Book of Secrets on Land Spirits, the stove should be protected by walls on three sides and exposed to fresh air on one side. The best location is to the south or to the east or the southeast. 90

91 If the stove stands right in the centre with no screen on any side, it is convenient for cooking, but the fire does not concentrate. If the fire does not collect fresh air or vitality forces, it works against the collection of wealth. Secondly, if the water tap from the sink faces directly the stove it may incur acts of violence, for the fire and the water are in contradiction. This is a big fault. I discovered in the present case that there were going to be promiscuity and excessive drinking, and both the man and the wife were going to have their own lovers. Upon entering I noticed the bride was really beautiful, with charming facial features, the right height and a perfect figure, delicate hands, pretty shoulders and back, looking very much like a lady of aristocracy. But she had got a pair of apricot-pit eyes, glancing left and right sexily. Her movement of arms and legs are coquettish. All this told me that she was going to have a lover. I asked my friend who took me there: Do the new couple believe in geomancy? Very little, as they both study natural sciences. So I was asked to come to... To get to know each other and have a look around. Since the purpose of the visit was just to get to know 91

92 the host and to appreciate the luxurious residence, of course I was all praise to maintain our harmonious relations and said nothing to embarrass my friend. After we left the house, I told my friend to tell the couple that the stove in the kitchen had to be moved somewhere else. The couple took no notice of my warning. One year later I was told: The wife had an affair with her boss. The husband had a concubine outside. The husband indulged in excessive drinking. The final result would be divorce. I tell my readers this true story to show the right place for the stove. If the stove is set up in the centre of the kitchen, it is easy for the water tap to face it directly from any direction. The tap symbolizes Yang (the male) and the stove symbolizes Yin (the female). The contradiction between the Yang and the Yin results in promiscuity. I have also noticed that in the latest American designs, the stove always stands right in the centre of the most sophisticated kitchen. The designer of this residence knew nothing about geomancy. He was only after convenience and good appearance, but he encouraged adultery. 92

93 What I want to tell my readers is that at any cost don t make it possible to see fire upon entering the house. In other words, do not make it possible to see the kitchen or the incinerator; these two fires are not allowed to face the main gate. In a business situation, in a restaurant for example, the stove should not be put in the centre of the cross. Anything like a gas stove, a boiler, a heater, an electric stove or an electric cooker, should not be allowed to stand in the centre of the restaurant. A fire in the centre will pollute the air of the restaurant, making the atmosphere tense. The shareholders will not cooperate well and visitors will keep away. In the end, the business will go down. What is more important is that with fire in the centre, the land spirits find it hard to make their contribution effective. We must also pay attention to the rubbish in the kitchen as it is the kitchen that produces most of the rubbish. Rubbish must be wrapped up and taken away from time to time. The flow of water in the sink of the kitchen also deserves attention. The air extractor in the kitchen should be in a box and must not be put in a conspicuous place. If it is outstanding, it has bad effects on the house. Never open a skylight in the kitchen, for it lets the forces of fire go upwards. A skylight in the kitchen may incur unexpected calamities. 93
