1 Astronomy 110 Section 1 2 / 01/ 2012 Extra Credit Extra credit is available for students in section 1 (8:30-9:20am) of Astronomy 110 who choose to complete the attached exercises. The extra credit is worth a maximum of 30 points. It is entirely voluntary. Class grades will first be determined based on regular class work (midterms + final exam + homework). For those students who turn in the extra credit, the extra credit score will be added to the regular class work to determine new total scores and the possibility of a new grade. There are 3 exercises: You can choose to do any 2 of the options given below. 1. Observations of Venus and Jupiter+Galilean satellites (and The Moon) [20pts] 2. 3pp essay on NASA's "Mission to Mars" [20pts] 3. Construct your Natal Chart [10pts] The attached finding chart for exercise 1 (pp. 3-4) is to be used in plotting the positions of the planets Venus and Jupiter and the Moon during the period 5 Feb - 10 May, Specific instructions are given below the chart. All of the planets and The Moon follow fairly closely the same path across the sky as the Sun. This path - the ecliptic - is shown on each chart as a line running diagonally from the upper left to lower right of the chart, and you should use this line as a guide when plotting the observed position of the planet (and The Moon if it is within the fieldof-view shown on the chart). Please feel free to talk with me or with Yanxia Li if you have questions. All of the evening observing sessions will be announced in class approximately one week in advance, and will be held from ~6:30-8:00 pm at Kapiolani Park (a map showing the location in Kapiolani Park is included on the back of this page, and will also be available on the class website). The extra credit should be turned in on the last day of class (2 May), or at the latest, before Noon on 11 May, 2012 (at Wat 423).

JUPITER and VENUS Finding Chart Jupiter and Venus are visible at sunset throughout the period January June, Assignment: Using the above finder chart, you should record the position of Jupiter and Venus with respect to the background stars on at least 2 nights (separated by more than a few weeks) during the period 5 Feb - 10 May. The bright stars and their associated constellations are shown on the plot, along with the ecliptic plane. You only need to observe Jupiter and Venus once during the night. Record the night and time that you make the observation. You should sketch the location of the 4 Galilean satellites (Jupiter s largest moons), with respect to the planet using the spaces provided on the back side of this page. Note: At a different time or date the pattern of stars will be the same, only you may have to rotate the chart if you are observing Jupiter or Venus later in the evening. If your observation is during the periods 22 Feb 02 Mar, Mar, or Apr then you should also record the position and appearance of the Moon since it will be somewhere on the above finder chart during these 3 periods.

5 2. NASAʼs Missions to Mars: 1996 to ~2025 Write a ~3 page essay covering the following: 1. Give an outline of the NASA/JPL robotic missions that have been launched since 1996 and that are in the pipeline for launch up to the through the year Most all of the material you will need can be found on the following web site: You can click on the All Mars Missions button on the left hand navigation bar for the timeline and summary of all of the Mars missions that are currently in the NASA pipeline. You can extract from this document most of the information you will need for your written summary. Your summary should include the method of launch, and the scientific goals and duration of the actual missions. 2. Assume that a sample return proposed for the 2 nd decade of this century finds compelling evidence for past life on Mars and that the world s space agencies decide to go ahead with a mission to send a crew of six astronauts to Mars by the year ~2025. Assume also that the new ion propulsion spacecraft of the Deep Space series have become a proven and reliable technology and that an ion-propulsion craft can be launched from the Space Station, which became a completed and permanent facility in the year Assume that a space plane with ion propulsion can be readied for the Mars mission by Describe how long it will take for the roundtrip Assume that it will take a total of 7 months for the complete round-trip to Mars (3 months to travel from Earth to Mars + 3 months for the return trip from Mars to the Earth + a 1 month stay on the surface of Mars. What might the astronauts need to take with them for exploring the planet, and what may they want to bring back from Mars to the Space Station and to Earth for further study? Information about the ion propulsion technology that was tested on Deep Space 1 can be found on the NASA website

7 3. Natal (Birth) Chart Assignment: Construct a table that lists the positions (i.e. Signs of the Zodiac) of celestial bodies at the date, time, and place of your birth. The simplest of horoscopes is the Natal (or Birth) chart that lists the directions of the 9 planets + the Sun and the Moon + the Ascending Point at the location and time that you were born. You can calculate this information by going to the following free web site The Zodical Zephyrs Astrological Chart Service: and entering the required Birth Data in the boxes on the left side of the form. You will need to know the following: Date of your birth Time of birth (if not known, then use 1:00am) Time zone of the place where you were born (+/- Hrs from 0 GMT) Latitude and Longitude (in degrees) of the place where you were born (you can get this from Google, for example) Latitude degrees (N or S ot the equator) Longitude degrees (E or W of Greenwich) On the right side of the form, under options, use the following settings: Zodiac: Tropical House System: Placidus Output: Chart Wheel (Graphic) To display your astrological chart, simply hit Continue Display the Chart You can then print out the chart and turn it in along with the other extra credit exercises. Alternately, you can simply fill in the table below listing the zodiacal Sign for each object: Sun Moon Mercury Venus Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto Ascending point You are free to explore the astrological interpretation of your Natal Chart, but I would not recommend using any of the pay sites that dominate the web. A good place to go to understand the details of astrological charts is the free Wikipedia site at
